We have seen God.

Writer: Lindsey ReichertLindsey Reichert

Today we studied the pantheon in English class. We walked around the room and learned about all the gods that were worshipped at the center of the Roman Empire.

And here’s what I want you to know. Our God is radically different because we have seen Him.

The Trinity always felt like something that was above my pay grade, and it still does. Side note - I’m glad we have a God that my human brain cannot understand. It means He is bigger than me. But this week I did a deep dive into Mormonism. After talking with a Mormon friend it felt like we were saying the same thing and I was struggling to understand the difference. After all my reading and podcasting listening, it came down to this - we have seen God.

Jesus came as fully God and fully man. I don’t know how that all works together but He made RADICAL claims when He said, “I am” also the Old Testament reference to the name “Yahweh” and God’s personal name for Himself. The Jews understood this to be the name of the One True God. The God of Moses and Abraham who had claimed He was different from the pagan gods because the “Lord your God, the Lord is One” Deuteronomy 6:4.

Every other religion claims that they have seen a piece of god, or an image of him, but there is something hidden that has not been revealed. But not ours.

Jesus entered the story and brought the full weight of Divinity on earth so that there is nothing left for us to wonder. If I have seen Jesus, I have seen God. I take great comfort in that. It makes me want to stare at Him for all eternity.

So as I sat with my Mormon friend, I knew we could have debated a lot of topics within the religion. But it came down to this, “You say, three persons and three gods, I say, three persons and One God.”

And that makes all the difference.
